The Memoirs of a Butterfly
Bringin’ On The Heartbreak
From The Sunday Mirror:
”I love butterflies - not real ones, but my collection of things with butterfly designs on them. My friends keep giving me presents like butterfly hair clips and jewellery boxes. I like jewellery but I’ve only just got into it in the last couple of years. I’m not really flashy, and I didn’t believe in it before then.” October, 2003After the success of I Know What You Want, Mariah decided to go on tour. Her voice was praised by fans. A last single would be released from Charmbracelet: Bringin’ On The Heartbreak. The song was praised by critics, calling this the highlight of the album. Carey cited this song as one of her favorites when she was growing up. She said that she first came up with the idea of covering it when listening to Def Leppard’s album Vault during the album photo shoot for Charmbracelet.
Facts and Legacy
- Fans from Def Leppard and rock lovers hated Mariah Carey’s version…
- … But Phil Collen (Def Leppard member) defended Carey’s saying “the fans really get it wrong sometimes; she’s on our side and it’s an honour she’s done it” and Joe Elliot (another member and songwriter) said “I think she’s done a very good job.”
- The single’s video is based on the 1979 film The Rose, which features a rock star (played by Bette Midler) who struggles to find happiness as she goes from her rough ‘rock and roll’ lifestyle to her final high profile concert.
- It was number 24 on VH1’s Least Metal Moments - in a segment subtitled “Bringin’ On the Headache” - because many metal fans and musicians didn’t like the remake.
- Bill Lamb from About.com ranked it at number 2 on his list of Top 5 R&B/Pop Crossover Cover Songs and said Carey’s version is “superior to the original.”
Charts and Sellings
- Bringin’ On The Heartbreak charted in Swiss and Belgium (Wallonia) at top 40.
- It reached #5 at Dance Club Play chart.
- It has sold more than 5,000 copies worldwide.
